2 Peter 3:9

"The Lord... is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance."

A Simple Process For Devotions

Having devotions using the Life Journal is simple enough for a child to do and deep enough for the most mature of Christ-followers.

Step 1
Find the Scriptures for today in the Reading Schedule.

Step 2
Read today’s Scripture with an open heart.  Highlight or underscore words, phrases or entire paragraphs that “wow” your heart.  You’ll write these down in your journal later.

Step 3
Grab your pen and journal and write down what the Holy Spirit is teaching you using the SOAP acrostic.  In your Life Journal write down the following…

S - Scripture
Write out long hand the verse(s) that “wowed your heart.”  Don’t skip this part.  Don’t just write the reference!  Writing out each word has proven to be useful to cement God’s idea to your mind.  And while you are writing, God can give you more insight.  Slow down… write out the Scripture!

O - Observation
What is going on in this text?  What is God is saying to you in this Scripture? Write it down in your own words.  Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you the truth of His Word.

A - Application
Apply the truth to your own life.  Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Perhaps it is instruction, encouragement, revelation of a new promise, or corrections for a particular area of your life. Write out in your Life Journal how this Scripture applies to you today.

P - Prayer
This is often the most powerful part of the process.  Write out your prayer to the Lord.  Share your heart with Him.  This can be as simple as asking God to help you live out this Scripture.  It might be praising Him for the truth you’ve learned.  It might be a cry for help!  Whatever your prayer this day, write it out.

Step 4
Give your journal entry a title.  Turn to the Table of Contents and enter it there by date, topic and title.

Step 5
Turn to your Prayer List and pray for the things you have written there.

Step 6
At some point in your day share what you “got” during your devotions with someone else; a friend; a family member. Reading your Life Journal entry to another person will solidify what the Holy Spirit is teaching you and will often bless and encourage them. Listen as they share...
